NEW HAVEN >> Performances of Jerry’s Cabaret: A Veterans Salute have love and honor covered exceedingly well.
The New Haven Symphony Orchestra Pops concerts will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (May 3) at Hamden Middle School and at 3 p.m. Sunday (May 4) at Shelton Intermediate School. Conductor Jerry Steichen will bring his unique approach as a storyteller to the performance as he leads soprano Sarah Uriarte Berry and baritone Jim Weizter in a medley of the love songs and touching goodbyes that punctuate the lives of our veterans.
The tunes will range from World War II’s Richard Rodgers song “I Wish I Were in Love Again” to the Vietnam era’s “Moon River” by Henry Mancini and Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” to today’s “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. The concert will conclude with a medley honoring each service and asking that veterans in the audience stand and be recognized for their courage and sacrifice.
Steichen has been music director of the Ridgefield Symphony and the principal pops conductor of the Utah Symphony and the New Haven Symphony.
Tickets ($35, $45) can be purchased through the NHSO Box Office at 203-865-0831 (ext. 10) or www.NewHavenSymphony.org. Blue Star tickets for families of active duty military personnel are free. Student tickets are always $10; KidTix (ages 6-17) are free with a paying adult.
